Searching the Web

Ready to search the internet? Sometimes you will need information that is not available through GALILEO or other CGTC Library resources.  Click on the questions below to see general guidelines and tips to use when looking for information on the web:

Where should I start my search?

What do I search for?

What websites should I use?

For additional tips, strategies, and suggestions on using internet search engines, check out this free tutorial, Internet 101: Search Engines and Strategies (courtesy of the GoodWill Community Foundation).

Remember: Anyone can publish any information on the internet.  Take time to validate the information from more than one source before using the information for school or work. For more information on evaluating your internet sources, check out the CRAAP Test in the box below!

Evaluating Internet Resources: The CRAAP Test

Know your source!  When searching for information on the internet - be sure to always use the CRAAP Test!

  • How timely is the information?
  • When was the information published?
  • Has it been revised or updated since then?
  • Is it current enough for your uses, or is it out of date?
  • Are there functional links to other information on this topic?

Relevance:

  • Does the information fit your needs?
  • Does the information address your question?
  • What audience is the information intended to reach?
  • Is the information at an appropriate level for your needs?

  • What is the source of the information?
  • Who wrote or published the information?
  • What are the author’s credentials or affiliations?
  • Is the author qualified to write on this subject?
  • Is the author or publisher’s contact information given?

Accuracy:

  • Is the information correct?
  • Where did the author get his/her information?
  • Is the information supported by evidence?
  • Has the information been reviewed by an expert?
  • Can the information be verified in an independent source?
  • Are there spelling, grammatical, or other errors?

Purpose:

  • Why does this information exist?
  • What is the reason the information was published (to inform, teach, persuade, entertain, sell, etc.)?
  • Are the author’s intentions clear?
  • Is the information fact or opinion?
  • Are there biases (political, cultural, religious, personal, etc.)?
